Hoog vermogen industriële femtosecond lasers voor hogere ablatie efficiëntie

Increasing the power, pulse energy or repetition rate, of femtosecond lasers has been a general trend in in order to comply to the needs of the market for higher throughput. One of the strategies of increasing the power has resulted in the development of a GHz femtosecond laser. When increasing the repetition rate during the process beyond several hundred kHz, the delay between the laser pulses is less than the thermal relaxation time and there is thermal accumulation in the target material. Due to thermal accumulation, which occurs over the duration of the burst, the absorption coefficient for each subsequent pulse in the burst increases and the required energy to induce ablation decreases. Thanks to a specific ablation scheme in GHz mode, the ablation efficiency is then comparable to the case of single nanosecond pulses, but with the usual quality of femtosecond processing.

3D micro-texturing and micro-milling using ultrashort pulse lasers

Laser micromachning using ultrashort pulse lasers can be used to machine micron-sized features that are not possible to machine using longer pulsed lasers, and they enable machining of a much larger variety of materials.
Applications of micro-texturing include changing the functional properties of a surface, such as friction or wetting properties, or machining decorative surface textures. Micro-milling is used to machine accurately shaped pockets into materials, for example to machine molds, tooling or for machining of small parts.
Recent advances of this technology are presented, together with a 5-axis machining system that was specifically developed for enabling texturing and milling on complex curved surfaces.

How to get a lead in your field with Photonic IC technology

Photonic Integrated Circuits offer a lot of advantages over their non-integrated counterparts: they are more compact and more robust, they can become much cheaper by eliminating a large amount of packaging cost and they offer higher performance. They can be applied with advantage in many fields, like telecom and datacommunications, sensors and metrology, medical diagnostics and automotive. A major barrier for their application are the large upfront investments in equipment and process development, which are prohibitive for most companies. The Netherlands is pioneering an open-access foundry model for Photonic ICs which makes it possible to develop and manufacture Photonic ICs for a variety of applications without large upfront investments. This brings the application of Photonic ICs within reach for many companies. In the presentation an overview of the present status and the potential of the Dutch ecosystem for development, manufacturing and application of Photonic ICs by SMEs and larger companies will be given.

Laser Crash Course

This course wants to answer your basic questions on laser technology: How does a laser work? What materials can I machine? What type of laser fits my application? How safe is it to work with lasers?

During this 2-hour crash course, I am going to give an introduction to laser technology as a tool for production. I will show necessary basic physics, present different laser technologies and review latest developments and applications, such as the use of lasers in additive manufacturing.

There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions throughout the course.
